KREONET SDN-based Wide-Area Research Network

Ultra-high-performance network for national science and technology innovation

A Software-Defined Wide-Area Research Network based on the Korea Research Environment Open NETwork (KREONET)

KREONET-S : KREONET-based Wide-Area Software-Defined Network

A software-defined wide-area research network (KREONET-S) has been established to provide a programmable network infrastructure based on network virtualization and intelligence.

KREONET-S, built in 2015 as the first software-defined wide-area research network in Korea, is based on the KREONET. KREONET-S was designed and implemented to realize an end-to-end, on-demand, virtualized and intelligent programmable network, aiming to provide timely and collaborative connectivity for advanced scientific and applied research.

Main Purpose

  • KREONET-S develops infrastructure to support advanced collaborative research based on large-scale scientific data and to enable leading-edge scientific and technological applications
  • By utilizing SDN, a next-generation network technology, KREONET-S provides high-performance and highly secure on-demand virtual networks tailored to researchers’ needs.
  • KREONET-S establishes an environment for timely and effective research collaboration by building and operating an advanced programmable networking infrastructure focused on network virtualization and intelligence

Deployment Status

  • Backbone Deployment: Established in five domestic locations (Daejeon, Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Changwon) and three international locations (Chicago, USA; Seattle, USA; Hong Kong, China).
  • Connected Institutions: Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and Hongik University Sejong Campus, among others.
  • Inter-domain Integration: Construction of an international programmable network testbed (Korea–China) through software-based federation between SDN domains
